Which t-shirt colour suits me? The honest guide

Which t-shirt colour suits me? The honest guide

The internet is full of colour type theories. Spring, summer, autumn, winter — it sounds like you need a personality test to buy a shirt. It doesn't have to be that complicated.

This guide is much simpler. We split it into three categories: the safe choices that work for everyone, the smart choices per skin tone, and the colours you're probably overlooking. Each colour links to a concrete situation. So you don't just know which t-shirt colour suits me, but also when to wear it.

Which t-shirt colour suits me? The safe choices

There are three colours where you really can't go wrong. Regardless of skin tone, hair colour or occasion. These are the cornerstone of any man's wardrobe.

Dark blue. Not black, but dark blue. It's the most versatile colour in a man's wardrobe. Formal enough without being stiff, casual without being sloppy.

Under a jacket it works perfectly. On a terrace it looks just as good. At Club 24 we call this Black Navy and Club Navy. Two shades of dark blue, each with its own character. Black Navy is so dark it almost looks black in artificial light. Club Navy is warmer, with more depth.

White. White goes with literally everything. But it has to be a non-see-through shirt. A white tee that shows your skin is basically an undershirt.

The Freedom Fit Tee in White Smoke and Sensational White is made from 24-Hour Cotton™: double-knit interlock cotton of 200+ gsm. Put your hand behind it — you won't see it.

Black. The always reliable choice. Bold, simple and always right. Note: cheap black fades to grey after a few washes.

The denser fibre structure of 24-Hour Cotton™ holds pigment better. This black stays black. Paint It Black is the deepest black. Black Navy has a dark blue undertone — slightly softer and more interesting.

Which t-shirt colour suits me? By skin tone

You don't need a complicated colour analysis. The only thing that matters is whether your skin has a warm or cool undertone. A quick test: look at the inside of your wrist. Are your veins blue or purple? Your undertone is cool. More green means warm.

  • Light, cool skin (blue/purple veins, burns easily): Choose muted, cool colours. Navy, grey, burgundy and muted greens. Club 24 offers Club Navy, Club Silver and Club Caviar in these tones. Avoid bright colours and warm earth tones — they'll wash you out.
  • Light, warm skin (green veins, tans golden): Warm, natural tones work best. Think sand, olive, camel and warm grey. Club Mocha, Sandbar and Hunter Green are perfect options. Pastels and ice-cold colours work less well here.
  • Medium skin (mix of blue and green, tans easily): This skin type has the most colour freedom. Navy, white, olive, burgundy and terracotta all work well. Choose colours that appeal to you.
  • Dark skin (dark veins, rich pigment): Strong and bright colours are ideal. White looks spectacular on dark skin. Bold blue, burgundy and dark green too. Club 24's Sensational White, Club Navy and Forest Green work well here. Be careful with black — it can sometimes give too little contrast. Try Black Navy for more dimension.

The colours you might be overlooking

Ask ten men what t-shirt colour they wear and nine will say black, white or grey. Safe choices, fair enough.

Yet the most stylish men have a special colour in their wardrobe. A colour they combine with everything and get compliments on.

  • Olive green. The most underrated colour in menswear. Warm enough for casual, serious enough for business. Suits almost everyone. Under a dark jacket, a great alternative to white. Easy to combine with jeans. Club 24's Hunter Green is a subtle, muted olive that stands out without shouting.
  • Burgundy. Dark red with depth. It says "I thought about what I'm wearing" without trying too hard. Club Merlot is deep enough for autumn and winter, but also works on a summer evening.
  • Camel. Sand-coloured, warm and surprisingly versatile. Works with jeans, dark trousers and even a white suit in summer. Sandbar is lighter, Club Mocha darker and warmer within this spectrum.

Choosing a t-shirt colour per occasion

Beyond colour advice per skin tone, it helps to know which colour to choose for different occasions.

  • Office or business meeting: Safe choices are Black Navy, Club Navy, White Smoke and Club Silver. They work under a jacket and look professional enough to be taken seriously. Avoid bright colours and prints.
  • Casual weekend: Anything goes. Pick a colour that works with many trousers — like Club Mocha with jeans and chinos, or Hunter Green with black and beige. This effectively doubles your wardrobe.
  • Date night: Black is easy, but want to stand out without overdoing it? Go for Club Merlot or a deep olive green. These colours project confidence without being loud.
  • Wedding or party: White Smoke under a dark suit is the most elegant combination there is. The t-shirt makes the suit almost unnecessary, while looking perfect next to it.
  • Travelling: Combine colours for maximum variety with minimal packing. The 3-shirt formula works perfectly: one neutral (white or grey), one earth tone (olive or sand), one statement colour (navy or burgundy). Three shirts, nine outfits.

The 3-shirt starter strategy

Not sure which t-shirt colour suits me? Start with three basics.

  • Shirt 1 – The foundation. Choose Black Navy or Paint It Black. This is the shirt you'll wear most. It combines with everything and always works.
  • Shirt 2 – The contrast. A light tee like White Smoke or Sensational White gives you two extremes. Two completely different looks from two shirts.
  • Shirt 3 – The personality. Choose a colour that makes you stand out. Club Mocha for warm, casual looks. Hunter Green if you dare something different. Club Merlot if you love deep tones.

With these three t-shirts you have a foundation that lasts months. Notice yourself always reaching for one colour? Then you know which colour suits you. Time for a second colour.

Not sure? Three smart ways to choose

1. Look at what you already wear. Open your wardrobe. Which colour do you see most? That's your instinct. Trust it and choose that colour in a better quality.

2. Ask someone else. Not "which colour do you like?" but "which colour do I look best in?" Others often see what suits you better than you do in the mirror.

3. Start dark. Really unsure? Go for Black Navy. It's dark enough to feel safe, but not quite black — which makes it more interesting than standard black. Almost nobody regrets this choice.
