What does GSM tell you about a T-shirt?

Signature Tee Deep Black

Pick up two T-shirts and one may feel lighter than the other. You might see 220 or 330 GSM in the description. That number is useful, but it only tells you part of the story.

Grams per square metre

GSM measures the weight of one square metre of fabric. A 330 GSM fabric weighs more per square metre than a 220 GSM fabric. It is not the weight of the finished shirt. That also depends on its size, the amount of fabric and the finishing.

Heavier is not automatically better

More weight may suit you if you prefer a substantial shirt. If you want less fabric underneath another layer, lighter cotton may be more comfortable. The highest number is not a quality certificate. Consider the yarn, knit, seams and fit as well.

Weight and interlock describe different things

Interlock describes how a fabric is knitted. GSM describes its weight over an area. The terms are not interchangeable. The Freedom Fit Tee uses interlock cotton at approximately 220 g/m². The Signature Tee has a fabric weight of 330 g/m². Neither figure tells you which size to buy.

Choose for the way you wear it

Try the shirt on its own, then add the sweater or overshirt you plan to wear with it. Too much fabric under your arms? Try a lighter model. Prefer a fuller shirt to wear on its own? Consider the Signature Tee. Check the garment measurements for each model. Heavier fabric does not mean you need a larger size.
